A Journey Through Symbols
As part of their Religious Education classes, our Year 12 students were given the opportunity to reflect on their journey at St Luke's College through a meaningful writing activity. Students were asked to choose a symbol that represented their time at the College, reflecting on the memories, friendships, challenges and personal growth they had experienced throughout their schooling.
From these heartfelt reflections, two students, Patrick Costelloe and Ava Gibson , were selected to present their speeches at the 2026 Year 12 Graduation Dinner , sharing their stories in front of their fellow graduates, teachers, families and loved ones.
Patrick Costelloe – The Butterfly
Patrick chose the butterfly as a symbol of transformation, growth and the impact of life's smallest moments. His speech reflected on how students entered high school like caterpillars in their cocoons, unsure of who they were or who they would become.
Through friendships, challenges, mistakes and memorable experiences, they gradually found their confidence and grew into the young adults they are today. Patrick reminded his fellow graduates to embrace their imperfections, appreciate the journey and never be afraid to be themselves.
He concluded with a powerful message: "Our time in the cocoon is over. It's time to spread our wings."

Ava Gibson – The Photograph
Ava chose a photograph as her symbol, representing the memories and moments that make up a student's journey through school. She reflected on how photographs capture much more than an image, holding stories of friendships, laughter, challenges and achievements.
From the very first day of school to their final moments as Year 12 students, Ava highlighted the importance of appreciating the memories made along the way and recognising the families, teachers and friends who helped make them possible.
Her speech beautifully captured the bittersweet feeling of graduation, as students close one chapter of their lives and prepare for the unknown adventures ahead.

Two Symbols, One Shared Journey
Although Patrick and Ava chose different symbols, both speeches shared a common message of gratitude, growth and the importance of embracing every moment.
Their words were a wonderful reminder that a student's journey at St Luke's College is about so much more than academics. It is about the friendships formed, the lessons learned, the challenges overcome and the people who shape us along the way.
A huge congratulations to Patrick and Ava for delivering such thoughtful and meaningful speeches, and for representing the Class of 2026 so beautifully on this special evening.
