Spirit Week
This year, our Graduating Class of 2023 wanted to celebrate their last week of Year 12 with a theme of activities embodying school unity and spirit.
Monday kicked off with "Anything but a backpack" where students let their creativity and resourcefulness show by using an alternative to their backpack for a day. We saw it all, from mini shopping trolleys, a wheelbarrow, eskie's, a first aid kit, milkcrates and a ride on suitcase worthy of a mention! The theme generated a lot of excitement during the school day with a lot of students participating.... but I think the novelty wore off quite quickly for some towards the end of the day. Tuesday's theme was "Dress as a Teacher Day" but students were surprised to find out Teaching staff had teamed up and dressed as students. The whole school was a buzz during lunch as students and teachers took part in a parade in front of the school. On Wednesday, Mr Dale assisted with the set up of the iconic Slip and Slide (between the basketball courts and Fortescue House) and supervised the shenanigans that unfolded. No students were harmed during this activity, just a few self inflicted bruises and scratches! Friday, it was Game On! At lunch, the whole school migrated to the gym to watch the feisty competition in Multisport with girls VS boys. Only, the boys were wearing the girls netball uniforms and the girls wearing the boys basketball uniforms. The girls put up a great fight but in the end, the boys took the win. I am not sure what they enjoyed more, the win or getting to show off in the netball uniform!
During the week various celebrations were held to farewell the Class of 2023. Mrs Smith hosted her Year 12's for Taco's and Mrs Potter & Mrs Oxley held a morning tea for the library kids. Reality was beginning to set in for some students that this was their final week of their high school journey. In the final days of Spirit Week, graduates tied up any loose ends, cleaned out their lockers and ensured their much loved teachers and peers all signed their leaver shirts. As students handed their shirts to me to sign, the messages I read as I pondered what to write brought a smile across my face. They are a group that will be remembered for their endless banter, sense of humour and many great achievements.
Their last week of high school was a great celebration of mate ship, comradery, creativity and joy that ultimately resulted in memories that will last them a lifetime. They embraced every theme and truly got into the spirit of St Luke's inaugural "Spirit Week".
