Pilbara Interschool Athletics Carnival 2023
Hedland Senior High School hosted their first Pilbara Interschool Athletics Carnival on Thursday and Friday 7th and 8th of September. Previously held in Tom Price, it's always been an exciting occasion in the local sporting calendar.
On a sunny Thursday afternoon, students from various schools across the region came together to showcase their athletic talents and competitive spirit. St Luke's students travelled by bus to Hedland straight to Hedland Senior High School in preparation for the competition. After our arrival, events began that evening including Long Jump, High Jump and 800m run. After a great meal generously supplied by Roy Hill, we retired to our sleeping quarters in the new Sports Centre at HSHS which provided the added bonus of basketball games right up until bedtime.
The next morning we woke bright and early, packed our gear and ate breakfast, and then headed outside for the remaining events. After more track sprints, shot put and discus, it became evident it was down to three schools in the hunt for the overall shield: Hedland, Karratha High and St Luke's. With some great relay performances we thought we'd given ourselves a real chance of victory, but were ultimately pipped by a few points to Karratha High and had to settle for a well-earned second place.
Once again St Luke's students were exemplary in their participation, support and behaviour on the trip. On top of that, 4 of our students were recognised for outstanding efforts during the carnival:
- Ava Gibson - Year 9 Champion Girl
- Lawson Giltinan - Year 9 Champion Boy
- Evie Martin – Roy Hill Values Cup Award for going above and beyond in events
- Emen Auna – the SLC Spirit Award for outstanding commitment to the team
Overall, the inaugural Hedland Interschool Athletics Carnival was a resounding success, bringing together students from different schools to celebrate sportsmanship, talent, and healthy competition. It promises to be even better next year and we look forward to the opportunity of bringing the shield back to St Luke's College.
