SALT visits St Luke's!
Who are SALT you might ask? SALT is a non-profit incorporated organisation that formed in 2009 to provide a support network for tradeswomen, apprentices and women wanting to enter into a trade or further their trades career. As their website states, the aims of SALT are:
- Providing support and mentoring to tradeswomen in Australia including apprentices and women seeking to work in trades
- Provide avenues for women to meet other tradeswomen, apprentices and others to share experiences
- Promoting women in the trades to the general public and industry
- Advocating for change to attitudes to women working in the trades.
- Campaigning for changes which enable women to train and work in trades.
SALT have had great success in achieving this through a number of successful initiatives, designed to be practical and encourage change in the way women view themselves and how society views women. Partnering with the Department of Education and Department of Training and Workforce Development (DTWD) one of these initiatives is delivering workshops in primary and secondary schools. These workshops focus on the safe use of tools in a real life workshop, deliver talks about making positive career choices, and the many different pathways into which enable women to earn reasonable wages to support themselves and their families.
On 29th August, SALT were invited by CEWA & DTWD to St Luke's to deliver their workshop to 23 of our Year 9 students (21 girls and 2 boys). They set up their workshop in the school gym and away they went. Students heard from each of the SALT Leaders who spoke about their journey into trades and their involvement with SALT before diving headfirst into their project to build a tool caddy. Students were firstly briefed on the Safe Working Procedures, guided through their own personal tool kit & PPE before making a start on their caddy.
With only a short break in their day, students were extremely engaged, listened carefully to each and every step and all produced work to a great standard. Upon the close of the workshop all students conducted themselves professionally and assisted in the cleanup of their own workstations and the gym. We are extremely grateful for their visit and received overwhelming feedback from all students involved. It was very clear to me that SALT are having the impact on young women they set out to achieve. We believe in this initiative and we hope to have them visit us again next year.
