Math-O-Mania
On Saturday 29 July, thirty eight students descended on the St Luke's gym to compete in our annual Math-O-Mania competition.
The day kicked off with a team engineering challenge to build a trigger launcher. The goal for students was to build and modify a simple trigger-release cork launcher that fired up to or more than 10 feet. They were each given a kit with rubber bands, corks, a wooden peg and pop sticks and the necessary tools to build their launchers. Students eagerly worked in their teams to consider the design variables and key concepts (trajectory, trigger & energy transformation) whilst building their design. Once built, they would test and modify until they were satisfied with their results! It was a great, fun filled team activity, challenging students to hone in on spatial reasoning and math skills needed to perform calculations relating to distance, area, volume, angles, weight and measurement.
After recess, students had to focus on answering as many enrichment mathematics questions within a tight time frame followed by some maths puzzles & systems of linear equations. Next, the students competed in Kahoot, a game based learning platform where students played games, answered trivia questions and competed in some speed rounds. After lunch students were challenged with an escape room scenario. Everyone seemed to enjoy each of the various challenges throughout the course of the day whilst achieving some really great individual and team results. The final results are as follows:
