2023 NAIDOC Week Celebrations
NAIDOC Week is an Australian observance lasting from the first Sunday in July until the following Sunday. This years theme is "For our Elders"
On Wednesday 19th July, St Luke's held a NAIDOC Liturgy of the Word Assembly for the whole school. Following acknowledgement of country, students watched a short clip on the 2023 National NAIDOC Week theme, For our Elders. The clip paid homage to past, present and emerging Elders that have paved the way for generations through advocacy and activism, and continue to guide our generations in everyday life and how to place ourselves in the world.
Fr Domenic provided us with a Gospel Reading and Homily, and Incense Blessing. Ms Tittums followed with the announcement of the NAIDOC colouring competition winners before closing out with our final song, put a little love in your heart! Well done and thanks to all those students who entered the colouring competition and a big congratulations to our winners Ebony Bird (1st), Annalise Ridley (2nd) and Kahlan Fisher (3rd). Ebony was awarded with a 2023 NAIDOC T-Shirt whilst the other winners were awarded with a box of chocolates.
On Friday 21st July, students selected to attend the upcoming Cultural Immersion Camp with Chisholm Catholic College organised a fundraising event. Students were invited to wear a NAIDOC theme inspired top in exchange for a gold coin donation with all proceeds going towards the Cultural Immersion camp.
The Cultural Immersion camp is in it's first year this year, is subsidised by the college and will hopefully continue to take place annually. It is an exciting opportunity for twelve lucky Year 10 students from St Luke's and Chisholm Catholic College to attend an immersive three day - 2 night camping and exploring adventure. They will be safely guided by Clinton Walker from Ngurrangga Tours, to explore aboriginal rock art and other significant cultural sites such as Python Pool, Gregory Gorge, Millstream and Cleaverville. This years camp will take place in Week 9 this term (3), so watch this space!
We had a great week with various things happening around the school. We hope you were able to attend some NAIDOC week celebrations in the community this year too!
