Country Week 2023
After a successful inaugural Country Week in 2022, St Luke's College took a larger squad of 48 students and 5 staff to Perth in Week 10 of Term 2. Students in Years 9-12 were eligible for selection in Basketball, Netball and Indoor Cricket, with a total of six teams representing across various Divisions.
We arrived Sunday night at our accommodation where we met for a pizza dinner and team meetings, in preparation for the big week ahead.
On Monday morning we attended our first opening ceremony at HBF Stadium (as last year COVID didn't permit) with 4500 other athletes from across the state. Shortly after, we commuted to our playing venues where it was "game on"! That night, Miss Braund organised a quiz night at Clancy's Fish Pub down the road, where we even managed to catch up with Mr Sharpe and Miss Dasborough.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday saw an increase in the number of games played each day, with St Luke's teams moving up the leaderboards in all sports. Night time activities included 3D glow-golf on Tuesday, Varsity Bar and an Optus Stadium tour Wednesday, and late night shopping at Garden City on Thursday. But, all the action was at our games, with the following win-loss results at the end of Thursday's final round robin matches:
GIRLS |
W - L |
BOYS |
W - L |
D Div Basketball | 7 - 1 | A Div Indoor Cricket | 3 - 2 |
E Div Netball | 4 - 3 | B Div Basketball | 7 - 0 |
G Div Netball | 7 - 0 | E Div Basketball | 3 - 4 |
Girls D Basketball, G Netball and Boys B Basketball all qualified for Friday's Grand Finals, with the G Netball and B Basketballers eventually bringing home our first ever championships. Girls G Basketball had a heartbreaking loss in their GF, but our highlights of the trip came from the pulsating win over cross-town rivals KSHS in the Basketball, and the complete dominance of our G Netballers all week.
Friday afternoon we said goodbye to our teammates as people went their different ways for the start of the school holidays (although 25 of us got the unexpected surprise of an extended airport holiday due to a four hour delayed flight).
A very big thank you to Ms Rowe, Miss Braund and Mr & Mrs Shand for their willingness to go above and beyond to make sure all our students had an enjoyable trip they'll never forget. I would like to extend our gratitude to the College and other staff for the support provided in our absence. Furthermore, another huge congratulations to all our country week representative students, the school community is very proud!
Bring on 2024 Country week when we go bigger again!
