STEM Expo/Movie Night

Last week, St Luke's College hosted our STEM Expo/Science Film Festival. We had a variety of student work on display from the different areas of STEM and many STEM related activities, including guess what's under the microscope, make your own sherbet/ice cream and the marshmallow tower challenge. Thank you to Woodside who also brought along some virtual reality equipment for everyone to try out.

The final round of our Year 8 STEM Projects were on display for judging, where students have been working on either an Engineering Project (designing a solution to a problem) or an Investigation Project (designing an experiment to answer a question). Congratulations to the students who were chosen as our winners, receiving a prize and the opportunity to enter in the STAWA Science Talent Search to compete against the rest of the state! These students created very impressive projects, including toothpaste tubes made from fish scale plastic, a regenerative electric fishing rod, an investigation into the most effective method of administering diabetes medication and an investigation into the effect of blue light on sleep.

The evening continued with an entertaining performance from Mathematics comedian, Simon Pampena, who had the crowd laughing while learning about maths at the same time (not an easy task!). He was followed by a showing of a selection of award-winning science films from the 2022 SCINEMA Science Film Festival on the outdoor screen.

We would like to thank everyone who attended the night, especially those who agreed to be judges for us. We would also like to thank the Karratha Education Initiative for their continued support, and the Polly Farmer Foundation who made it possible for Simon Pampena to be in the Pilbara.
